Construction began in 1875, designed by Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile, but due to lack of funding and scandals, it was frozen for 8 years and resumed in 1890. The theater opened on May 16, 1897 with the opera "Falstaff" by Verdi.
The building is built in neoclassical style with elements of ancient Greek architecture. The interior is decorated in the late Renaissance style. The hall has a capacity of 1,381 seats.
The theater was a success thanks to the sponsor Ignazio Florio. It featured such stars as Enrico Caruso and Giacomo Puccini.
In 1974, the theater was closed for restoration, which lasted 23 years due to corruption. On May 12, 1997, it reopened with a performance of Mahler's Second Symphony, and the regular season began in 1999.
