Symphoniker Hamburg has been the original symphony orchestra of all Hamburg residents since 1957. They stand for concerts that meet the highest artistic standards, for an unusually versatile music mediation, for profile in social debates and for the traditional location: the Laeiszhalle, whose residence orchestra they are. After almost six decades, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra is considered an essential part of Hamburg's musical life and as a representative of the still young idea of a Hamburg city of music.
The artistic director Daniel Kühnel and the world-renowned orchestra leader Sir Jeffrey Tate have made a name for themselves with their high-profile programming since they started working together in 2009. Not least because of the demanding and unmistakable programs that have become synonymous with Symphoniker Hamburg, the number of visitors has increased significantly. Sir Jeffrey died unexpectedly on June 2, 2017.
With their flair for extraordinary artists - the outstanding violinist Guy Braunstein is first guest artist, and Ion Marin was also able to win a distinguished first guest conductor in 2014 - Symphoniker Hamburg is always working to develop an unmistakable quality profile for their city. This should have an effect in all imaginable areas of life, be heard and experienced by every Hamburg citizen and shine beyond the city limits. The sphere of activity of Symphoniker Hamburg is accordingly not limited to the Laeiszhalle, but also extends to the University of Music and Theater, the Hamburg State Opera and concert halls in the surrounding area. In particular, music education for children and young people is a major focus. With their “MusikImPuls” campaign, they have been turning the streets and squares of Hamburg into a stage since 2015.
The orchestra has toured among others to Japan, the USA and many European countries.
