About
Growing up in the outer suburbs of Brisbane, Sophie’s love of music began at a young age when she began studying flute in primary school. Her studies shortly afterwards extended to both singing and theory of music, eventually leading to the completion of multiple ANZCA music qualifications. She then went on to graduate from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Education with Distinction, whilst continuing private singing tuition with Douglas McRae and studies in German at the Goethe Institut.
During this time, she also competed at various eisteddfodau including the Silkstone Eisteddfod (2016) and the Queensland Eisteddfod (2018). In addition to receiving the Best Performance in a Foreign Language Award, she achieved second place for Art Song, as well as placing third in both the Ladies Oratorio and Music Theatre/Light Opera sections.
Sophie made her stage debut in a production of West Side Story in the role of Consuelo, as well as being the understudy for the role of Maria. Following this success, she has performed the role of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, Pearly Blossom in Australian playwright Stanley Walsh’s The Spring Heeled Terror of Stepney Green, as well as Cosette in Les Misérables. Under the direction of multi-award winning director and actor Chris Bradtke, Sophie received praise from critics for her part in the duet A Heart Full of Love, for giving “the number the nuance and lift it needed to deliver”. Sophie was also fortunate enough to be chosen as a chorus member for Opera Queenland’s 2014 production of Puccini’s La Bohème. Her most recent engagements as a concert soloist include Pacific Opera’s Cantique de Noël, A Mother’s Day Concert and Shakespeare and Friends (Crescendo Series), The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust Gala Ball and various carols events including the 2016 Ipswich Carols by Candlelight.
Last year Sophie performed the role of Mabel in the Toowoomba Empire Theatre’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. Again receiving praise from critics for her “effortless soprano trills in Poor Wandering One…that brought thunderous audience applause”. With the recent completion of Pacific Opera’s 2018 Young Artist Program, Sophie now looks forward to her involvement in Opera Australia and GWB Entertainment’s 2019 touring BB Group production of West Side Story in the principal role of Maria.
