Overview

Tyll is a witty and energetic contemporary ballet by Alexander Ekman, inspired by the legendary figure Till Eulenspiegel. Combining playful choreography, dynamic movement and Mikael Karlsson’s music, the work explores freedom, humor and the rebellious spirit of its central character.

Tyll is a playful and visually striking contemporary ballet created by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman. Inspired by the legendary European trickster Till Eulenspiegel, the production follows a mischievous character who challenges conventions and refuses to take the world at face value.

Ekman combines energetic choreography, humor and theatricality with an original score by Mikael Karlsson. The production features stage design by Alexander Ekman and Tom Visser and costumes by Bregje van Balen, creating a vivid theatrical world for the Vanemuine Ballet Company.

With its dynamic movement, playful spirit and imaginative stage design, Tyll offers an entertaining and unconventional take on the classical ballet tradition while celebrating individuality, freedom and the joy of breaking the rules.

Vanemuine Theatre is the oldest theatre in Estonia, founded in Tartu in 1870. It is Estonia’s only three-genre theatre, presenting drama, music theatre—including opera, operetta and musicals—and dance, from classical ballet to contemporary dance.

The theatre operates across three venues: the Grand Building, the Small Building, and the Harbour Theatre. Its company includes an internationally diverse ballet troupe and a large symphony orchestra. Vanemuine is a repertory theatre, presenting more than 40 productions each season, including around 15 premieres.

The Grand Building, completed in 1967, is the theatre's principal large-scale venue for major opera, ballet, musical and drama productions. The Small Building, dating from 1914–1918, has an Art Nouveau character, while the Harbour Theatre is a modern multifunctional venue and black-box space near the Emajõgi River.

Vanemuine remains one of Estonia’s most important cultural institutions, combining a long theatrical tradition with an extensive contemporary repertoire.
