Overview

FIGURE and Refound present a contemporary chamber reimagining of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Award-winning countertenor Hugh Cutting and visionary director Laura Hounsell breathe fresh urgency into this timeless tale of love, loss, and the transformative power of music.Step into a world where ancient myth and modern drama converge in FIGURE and Refound’s bold chamber adaptation of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. In this intimate production, countertenor Hugh Cutting embodies the sorrowful musician whose haunting melodies unlock the gates of the underworld in a desperate quest to reclaim his beloved. Under Laura Hounsell’s inventive direction, a lean ensemble of mixed voices and instruments strips away 18th-century ornamentation, revealing the raw emotional core of Gluck’s reformist vision. As Orpheus leads Eurydice back toward the living world, every note and gesture heightens the tension until a single, irrevocable glance seals their fate. By weaving contemporary sensibilities into Gluck’s masterful score, this chamber version transcends its origins to become a living, breathing drama for today’s audiences.
