The concert opens with Caroline Shaw’s Companion Planting alongside Palestrina’s radiant Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas.Haunting in its emotion and radiant in its craft, Parry’s Songs of Farewell stands among the most powerful choral works of the early twentieth century. Composed in the shadow of the First World War and during the composer’s own failing health, each motet channels both the anguish of loss and the wistful reverie of a vanished era. The BBC Singers, conducted by Krista Audere, bring these six luminous laments to life, their voices weaving sorrow and nostalgia into a transcendent arc. The first half of the evening turns to renewal, evoking the natural world in Caroline Shaw’s Companion Planting before slipping back to the serene radiance of Palestrina’s earliest Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas.
