Programme
Overview
Mendelssohn’s Elijah returns in a thrilling chamber interpretation that fuses baroque grandeur with intimate drama. Bass-baritone Alaric Green debuts in the title role, joined by Madeline Boreham, Clare Presland and award-winning tenor Matthew McKinney. Accompanied by the Meridian Sinfonia in Joachim Linckelmann’s new orchestration, this landmark oratorio comes alive like never before.Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah stands as a crowning achievement in 19th-century sacred music, marrying the dramatic force of Handel’s Messiah with the expressive depth of Bach’s Passions. Conceived in 1837 but not heard until shortly before the composer’s untimely death, this oratorio traces the prophet’s epic struggle against false gods, his unwavering faith amid drought and exile, and his stirring confrontation with the priests of Baal. Joachim Linckelmann’s intimate chamber orchestration highlights every nuance, drawing out the humanity beneath Elijah’s grand declarations. Bass-baritone Alaric Green brings his commanding presence to the title role for the first time, while Madeline Boreham embodies The Widow, Clare Presland sings An Angel and The Queen, and Kathleen Ferrier Award winner Matthew McKinney transforms between Obadiah and King Ahab. Backed by the Meridian Sinfonia and a resonant chorus, Mendelssohn’s prophetic vision unfolds with renewed clarity and emotional power.
