Overview

La Traviata is a new French-language musical adaptation of Alexandre Dumas fils’ classic novel The Lady of the Camellias. Combining contemporary pop music with orchestral writing, the production retells the tragic story of Marguerite Gautier from a modern female perspective, exploring love, social prejudice, personal dignity and the courage to remain true to oneself.

Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ The Lady of the Camellias, this French-language musical transforms one of the most famous romantic tragedies of French literature into a contemporary musical-theatre production.

The story follows Marguerite, a celebrated Parisian courtesan whose life changes when she falls in love with the young Armand. Their relationship offers her the possibility of escaping the conventions and social labels imposed upon her. However, pressure from Armand’s family and the rigid social hierarchy of 19th-century Paris ultimately forces Marguerite to make a devastating sacrifice.

Rather than presenting Marguerite simply as a woman who sacrifices herself for romantic love, the production places greater emphasis on her desire for dignity, freedom and the right to determine her own identity.

Musically, the production combines electronic pop, orchestral textures, piano, violin and vocal writing. It also pays tribute to the operatic tradition associated with La Traviata, including a sampled passage from Verdi’s famous “Brindisi”, while giving each principal character an individual musical theme.

The visual design draws inspiration from the iron-and-glass architecture of Second Empire Paris. Large LED screens allow the stage to transform between Parisian salons, an opera house and the countryside, with the projections changing according to the emotional state of the characters.
