Markus Sittikus Hall

Located in the historic town of Hohenems in Vorarlberg, the Markus Sittikus Hall is one of the most important venues of the Schubertiade and is considered among the world’s finest halls for chamber music and Lieder recitals. With its exceptional acoustics, intimate atmosphere, and deep connection to the musical traditions celebrated by the festival, it provides an ideal setting for the works of Franz Schubert and the wider Romantic repertoire.

The hall occupies a carefully renovated historic building originally constructed in 1913 as a gymnasium and multipurpose hall. After the Schubertiade returned to Hohenems in 2005, the building was transformed into a dedicated concert venue, preserving its character while creating an acoustically outstanding space designed specifically for intimate musical performances.

Named after Count Markus Sittikus von Hohenems (1574–1619), the hall pays tribute to one of the town’s most distinguished historical figures, who later became Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. His legacy is closely linked with the architectural development of Salzburg and with the early history of opera performances outside Italy.

With seating for around 300 guests, the Markus Sittikus Hall offers a rare sense of closeness between artists and audiences. Its refined acoustics make it particularly suited to the delicate balance of voice and piano in Lieder performances, as well as to chamber music ensembles and solo recitals. The venue has also become a favoured location for professional recordings by internationally renowned musicians and labels thanks to its sound quality and intimate character.

During the Schubertiade, the hall welcomes some of the world’s leading singers, pianists, and chamber musicians. The programmes focus on Schubert’s extraordinary musical legacy while also exploring works by his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors. The venue’s scale and acoustics allow audiences to experience the emotional depth and subtle details of this repertoire in an exceptionally direct way.

The concert experience extends beyond the hall itself: visitors can enjoy the surrounding garden with fountains and an open-air hedge theatre, as well as the cultural atmosphere of Hohenems, a town deeply connected with the history and identity of the Schubertiade.

Intimate, acoustically exceptional, and devoted to the finest traditions of chamber music, the Markus Sittikus Hall is a true jewel of the Schubertiade — a place where Schubert’s music and the artistry of the world’s greatest performers can be experienced in their purest form.
