Overview

Our final production of the season features three choreographers equally at home on Broadway and at Pacific Northwest Ballet. Here, all three combine a knack for storytelling with superb dancing, and a bit of jazz for good measure. Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station, made for PNB in 2013, welcomes you to 1940’s New Orleans to the sweet strains of Allen Toussaint’s custom score. Christopher Wheeldon’s Carousel (A Dance) takes inspiration from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, and Susan Stroman’s TAKE FIVE…More or Less brings a jazz classic to life in a piece The Seattle Times calls “pure dance, and pure joy.”

Christopher Wheeldon's Carousel (A Dance) transforms Richard Rodgers' beloved musical into a poignant and deeply expressive ballet. Drawing on the emotional richness of Rodgers' iconic score, Wheeldon crafts a powerful portrait of love, longing, and redemption, blending theatrical storytelling with lyrical choreography to create a moving reimagining of a timeless American classic.

Susan Stroman's TAKE FIVE…More or Less is a witty and energetic dance work set to the iconic jazz music of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. Blending theatrical flair, rhythmic precision, and playful choreography, the piece celebrates the spirit of jazz through a vibrant exploration of movement, musicality, and American style.

Twyla Tharp's Waiting at the Station is a spirited celebration of rhythm, movement, and American musical traditions. Set to the soulful music of Allen Toussaint, the work blends Tharp's signature athleticism, wit, and musical sophistication into a vibrant exploration of human connection, anticipation, and the joy of dance.
