Overview

The Munich Philharmonic opens its new concert season with an extraordinary programme led by principal conductor Lahav Shani and featuring legendary pianist Martha Argerich. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring create an electrifying evening of French elegance, choral brilliance and revolutionary orchestral power.

The Munich Philharmonic launches its first concert season with principal conductor Lahav Shani with an exceptional programme featuring Martha Argerich, one of the greatest pianists of our time.

The evening opens with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a brilliant fusion of French elegance, jazz influences and dazzling piano writing. Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms follows, combining Jewish musical traditions with the composer’s unmistakable theatrical and Broadway-inspired energy, performed by the Philharmonischer Chor München and a soloist from the Tölzer Knabenchor.

The programme concludes with Igor Stravinsky’s revolutionary The Rite of Spring, a work renowned for its explosive rhythms, extraordinary orchestral colors and groundbreaking musical language. Under Lahav Shani, this powerful masterpiece provides a spectacular finale to the opening concert of the Munich Philharmonic’s new season.

Location   Hans-Preißinger-Straße 8

Isarphilharmonie is Munich’s most modern concert hall.

Since the Isarphilharmonie opened in October 2021, it has quickly gained a reputation for its special atmosphere and excellent sound. The list of orchestras performing here reads like a veritable Who’s Who, headed by the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. High profile concert agencies see the auditorium as the perfect place for guest appearances by national and international orchestras and it also hosts jazz productions and large-scale popular music concerts of all genres.

But the Isarphilharmonie also has another string to its bow: it can be blacked out, making it the ideal venue for film screenings – with or without orchestral accompaniment.

The building that houses the Isarphilharmonie is a steel structure with an internal volume of nearly 60,000 cubic metres. The concert hall itself can accommodate almost 2000 guests and is made from prefabricated solid wood elements. The walls are clad with black-stained softwood panels, while the stage and floors are made from light cedar wood for a striking contrast.
