About

The Schubertiade 2026 invites audiences to discover classical music in its most authentic form, where artistic excellence takes precedence over spectacle and every performance is shaped by close communication between musicians and listeners. Presented throughout the year in the Austrian towns of Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, the festival has earned an international reputation as the world's foremost celebration of the music of Franz Schubert, while embracing masterpieces by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Haydn, Mozart, and other great composers.

The character of the Schubertiade is defined by its exceptional venues. The elegant Angelika Kauffmann Hall in Schwarzenberg and the intimate Markus Sittikus Hall in Hohenems provide an ideal acoustic setting where every musical detail can be appreciated. Rather than grand productions, the festival offers thoughtfully curated piano recitals, chamber concerts, and lieder evenings that place performers and repertoire at the very centre of the experience.

The 2026 programme brings together many of today's most admired interpreters of the Austro-German repertoire. Legendary pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja appears in both a chamber concert with the Quatuor Danel and a solo recital devoted entirely to Schubert's late piano masterpieces. Violinist Veronika Eberle, cellist Julia Hagen, and pianist Lukas Sternath join forces for a chamber programme featuring works by Brahms, Shostakovich, and Schubert, while acclaimed pianist Marc-André Hamelin returns with one of his highly anticipated recitals.

The festival also welcomes distinguished vocal artists, including baritone Andrè Schuen with pianist Daniel Heide, soprano Christiane Karg performing alongside pianist David Fray, baritone Konstantin Krimmel with Ammiel Bushakevitz, mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert with Joseph Middleton, and tenor Mauro Peter, who joins an outstanding ensemble for a special evening of Schubert's vocal music.

Chamber music remains one of the festival's defining strengths. The Pavel Haas Quartett, Quatuor Danel, Aris Quartett, Minetti Quartett, and numerous distinguished soloists present programmes that explore the richness of the chamber repertoire, while innovative ensemble The Erlkings offers fresh and imaginative interpretations of Schubert's songs.

Every concert at the Schubertiade is carefully conceived, allowing audiences to experience familiar masterpieces in an atmosphere of quiet concentration and artistic sincerity. Without unnecessary theatricality, each performance reveals the emotional depth, elegance, and timeless beauty that continue to define Schubert's music.

About the Schubertiade

The Schubertiade Festival is widely regarded as the world’s leading festival dedicated to the music of Franz Schubert. Held annually in the Austrian towns of Schwarzenberg and Hohenems , the festival has become an international pilgrimage site for lovers of Lieder, chamber music, and the intimate traditions of Viennese classical music.

Founded in 1976, the Schubertiade was created with a clear artistic mission: to present Schubert’s music in ideal acoustic settings and in a spirit of authenticity, concentration, and artistic excellence. Over the decades, it has developed into one of Europe’s most respected classical music festivals, attracting many of the world’s finest singers, pianists, chamber ensembles, and instrumental soloists.

The festival is especially famous for its Lieder recitals, a genre in which Schubert remains unsurpassed. Audiences experience his songs in intimate halls where the connection between performer and listener is exceptionally direct. Alongside the Lieder programmes, the Schubertiade presents chamber music concerts, piano recitals, orchestral performances, and lectures exploring Schubert’s life and legacy.

Two venues have become synonymous with the festival: the elegant Markus-Sittikus Hall and the celebrated Angelika-Kauffmann Hall, whose outstanding acoustics are considered among the finest in Europe. Surrounded by the mountains and landscapes of Vorarlberg, these venues create an atmosphere of remarkable intimacy and serenity.

The Schubertiade is distinguished not by grand spectacle but by artistic depth. Its carefully curated programmes, exceptional acoustics, and focus on musical substance have earned it a unique reputation among performers and audiences alike. Many legendary interpretations of Schubert’s works have been heard here, making the festival an important part of the modern history of classical performance.

Intimate, refined, and devoted to the genius of Franz Schubert, the Schubertiade Festival offers one of the most authentic and inspiring classical music experiences in Europe — a place where great music is heard in its purest form, surrounded by the beauty of the Austrian Alps.
