Overview

A contemporary Wuju Opera adaptation of the famous episode from Journey to the West. The production combines traditional Wuju singing, acting and martial-arts techniques with modern stage technology, including naked-eye 3D effects, lighting, smoke effects and aerial stunts.

The story follows Tang Sanzang and his three disciples as they travel through White Tiger Ridge. The White Bone Demon repeatedly transforms herself into a young woman, an elderly woman and an old man in an attempt to capture Tang Sanzang. Sun Wukong sees through each disguise and defeats her three times.

Tang Sanzang, unable to distinguish the demon from ordinary people, believes that Wukong has killed innocent people and expels him from the group. After Wukong leaves, the White Bone Demon captures Tang Sanzang. Zhu Bajie escapes and goes to Flower Fruit Mountain to ask Wukong for help. Despite having been expelled, Wukong returns, defeats the demon and rescues his master.

The production was created in 2025 by Zhejiang Zhongyue Wuju Opera Troupe as an experimental combination of traditional Wuju Opera and contemporary technology. The traditional “singing, recitation, acting and martial arts” techniques are combined with 3D visual effects, modern lighting, smoke, special effects and aerial performance.
