Overview

One of the world’s most recorded cellists teams up with Artistic Director Simon Callaghan for an evening of vibrant discovery—from Martinů’s propulsive Arabesques and Smyth’s robust Sonata to Bosmans’s luminous Impressions—culminating in Beethoven’s sublime Op.69 Sonata. Experience a programme that breathes new life into neglected treasures and classical pillars alike. One of the world’s most recorded cellists joins Artistic Director Simon Callaghan for a captivating chamber recital that weaves rhythmic ingenuity, bold expression and classical refinement. The concert opens with Bohuslav Martinů’s Arabesques, where vibrant motifs and shifting accents ignite a sense of lively momentum. Next, Ethel Smyth’s muscular Sonata unveils powerful contrasts and dramatic energy, followed by Henriëtte Bosmans’s Impressions, whose shimmering harmonies and delicate textures cast an evocative, impressionistic glow. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Op.69 Sonata, its poised elegance and profound lyricism grounding the programme in the heart of the classical tradition. Throughout, the cellist’s resonant tone and Callaghan’s sensitive accompaniment illuminate both beloved masterworks and overdue-for-discovery repertoire, inviting listeners on a richly emotive musical journey.
