Programme

Overview

Discover a dazzling all-day piano odyssey at Colet House, where acclaimed virtuoso Abel navigates fifteen composers’ works across three movements—Universe, Mankind and Transfiguration. Be there for the world premieres of Sorabji’s Visuddha and Lawrence Ball’s Piano Suite 19, or simply drop in to savor a uniquely ambitious program.Set against the elegant surroundings of Colet House, the twelfth Planet Tree Music Festival presents a singular all-day piano event. From the cosmic sweep of its opening section Universe, through the richly textured landscapes of Mankind, to the transcendent finales of Transfiguration, Abel guides listeners through a diverse selection of fifteen composers—from the visionary mysticism of Scriabin to the bold modernism of Michael Finnissy, Helen Grime and Lisa Illean. The programme culminates in the world premieres of Sorabji’s newly rediscovered Visuddha and Lawrence Ball’s Piano Suite 19, offering a rare opportunity to hear ambitious new works alongside established masterpieces. Renowned for his nuanced tonal palette and formidable technique, Abel renders every complex detail with crystalline clarity. Whether you join for a single movement or immerse yourself from first note to last, this day-long showcase promises an unforgettable exploration of contemporary piano music, and is also available to stream live online.
